When you need an exact photo size
Whenever a form states dimensions and rejects what you have:
- Passport and visa applications: Each authority publishes its own figures.
- Exam and admission portals: Usually specifying both pixels and a file-size ceiling.
- ID cards and passes: Employers and institutions with their own standards.
- Government service registration: Systems that reject anything not matching exactly.
Dimensions and file size are separate hurdles
Most application forms impose both: an exact pixel size and a maximum weight in kilobytes. Meeting one does nothing for the other, and a correctly-sized photo can still be rejected for being too heavy.
Resize first, then compress. Resizing reduces file size on its own, often enough that little compression is needed afterwards — which keeps the photograph looking considerably better than squeezing a full-resolution image down to the same limit.
Crop before you resize
If the required proportions differ from your photograph's, resizing alone will distort it. A portrait requirement applied to a landscape photo produces a squashed face.
