When to rotate
Nearly always because something is displaying an image differently from how you shot it:
- Photos that upload sideways: The orientation-tag problem, and the most common case by far.
- Scans fed in the wrong way: A scanner has no idea which way up a page went.
- Documents photographed in portrait: A landscape page shot vertically needs turning to read.
- Mirrored selfies: Front cameras often flip the image, reversing any text in shot.
Rotating is lossless; arbitrary angles are not
A 90, 180 or 270 degree turn moves every pixel to a new position without inventing or discarding any, so there is no quality cost however many times you do it.
Rotating by an arbitrary angle is a different operation entirely: it requires resampling every pixel and leaves empty corners to fill. That is why this offers quarter turns rather than a free-form dial — the clean operation covers almost every real need.
Flipping is not the same as rotating
Rotating turns the image around its centre. Flipping mirrors it along an axis, which is equally lossless but produces a fundamentally different picture.
The thing to watch is text. Any writing visible in a flipped image reads backwards — usually the point when correcting a mirrored selfie, and almost always a mistake otherwise.

Why does my photo only look sideways on some sites?
