When an upload keeps being rejected
Nearly every image upload failure comes down to one of these:
- A CMS or platform limit: Publishing tools frequently cap per-file size.
- A phone photo straight from the camera: Modern phones produce several megabytes by default.
- A scanned document: Scans are heavy because of their resolution.
- A slow connection timing out: Smaller files complete where large ones stall.
Why platforms impose limits at all
Storage and bandwidth multiply. A platform expecting many thousands of uploads multiplies every file by that number, and the difference between 200KB and 5MB per image is the difference between manageable cost and an enormous one.
Small files also upload reliably on poor connections, which matters more than it sounds when someone is submitting from a phone on mobile data. That is why ceilings are often stricter than seems necessary.
Resizing gets you there more gracefully
If an image has far more pixels than it needs, reducing its dimensions first is more effective than compressing at full resolution. A 4000-pixel-wide photo squeezed to 200KB looks noticeably worse than the same photo resized to 1200 pixels and then compressed to 200KB.
Compression has to work much harder when there are four times as many pixels to store. Removing the excess first leaves the budget to be spent on the pixels you are actually keeping.
